A Place to Call Home

Building Homes for Vulnerable Youth
Anywhere you go in the world, transitioning from the dependence of childhood to the independence of adulthood is a major challenge. Today, one of the greatest “gaps” in global orphan care is serving a child during this critical period.

Just like you and I, a child in a children’s home does not know where to go or how to get there. The sad reality is this: if an adolescent child is not given the proper education, skills, and training, they will often wind up raising a child in the same kind of environment they were rescued from.

For more than 20 years now, Bread of Life has been a ministry that has embraced complex challenges head-on with both courage and creativity. In 2007, Bread of Life launched the Youth Transition Program (YTP) to help the children of Bread of Life learn to transition into a thriving adulthood. Over the years, I have watched countless children thrive in maturity when they move into the YTP.

This program has become the most successful transition initiative I have seen in global orphan care. It enables mature youth to move from the rural town of Brosteni to the bustling city of Bucharest, providing them with better education and economic opportunities while still receiving guidance.

In Bucharest, college and high school students live in apartments, experiencing a semi-independent lifestyle while being closely monitored and guided within a Christian community. I have personally witnessed the Youth Transition Program’s success, and now Bread of Life is preparing to take its next bold step.

Bread of Life is seeking to build a permanent facility within Bucharest, enabling orphaned youth to access university and vocational colleges for decades to come. This facility will be made up of 11 “townhomes,” with each housing four youths. Having the children under one common ground will allow them to thrive within a close Christian community. With them being in separate “homes,” the youths can transition into a more independent lifestyle, learning to cook their own meals and keep their homes clean. Bread of Life needs your help to make this dream a reality.

Each one of these townhomes is going to cost $35,000. Would you, your family or your church prayerfully consider making one of these homes a reality. This donation will house disadvantaged youth for decades, radically altering their lives. When you make a difference in just one child’s life, you affect not just their life but also the lives of their future generations. I believe that the development of these YTP homes will become a model for global transition initiatives.

For many of us, the word “graduation” brings to mind robes, diplomas, and proud family photos. But for the teenagers who are part of the Bread of Life family, this moment is so much more. It marks a profound achievement, a courageous transition into adulthood, and a first real step toward independence. Their determination inspires us and fills us with joy and pride.

Each fall, children approach the first day of school with nervous anticipation or eager excitement. As a child, I loved school. I remember preparing with a list in hand, carefully choosing pencils and notebooks. We weren’t wealthy, but my parents always found a way. Sadly, many children in Romania don’t get to experience that joy. For them, choosing school supplies or packing a backpack is out of reach. Without basic tools, some can’t attend school at all—missing the education that could shape their future.
