From Broken to Blessing: Iosif and the Meals on Wheels Ministry

The Meals on Wheels ministry has a special place in the history of Bread of Life. Nearly two decades ago, some of the first teenagers growing up in our Children’s Home began delivering hot meals by bicycle to elderly neighbors throughout the Broșteni area. What started as a simple idea became a lifeline for widows and isolated seniors who often struggled to prepare food or even leave their homes.



For nearly ten years, our teens faithfully made those deliveries, bringing not only food but friendship, encouragement, and dignity. When those young people graduated and moved on to the Youth Transition Program in Bucharest, we could no longer sustain the daily deliveries. We continued helping through food parcels and occasional assistance, but we longed for the day when this ministry could return.

Recently, God opened that door again — and He chose an unexpected young man to help carry it forward. In 2019, I drove four hours to bring Iosif and several of his siblings to the Bread of Life Children’s Home in Broșteni. When it was time to leave, everyone climbed into the van except Iosif. He wasn’t angry or resistant; he was simply afraid. After I promised him I would bring him back if he didn’t like it, he finally agreed to come.

When we arrived, things were not easy. Iosif rarely spoke and struggled to connect with those around him. As we learned more about his past, we understood that years of bullying and trauma had left deep wounds. After only a few days, he asked to leave, and I kept my promise and took him back home.



Then something unexpected happened.

A few weeks later, I received a phone call. Iosif wanted to return.I asked to hear it from him directly. In a quiet voice, he said, “Mr. Alin, I want to come back.” And he did.

This time, although still reserved, he slowly began to settle in. He started eating regularly, enrolled in school, and began to experience the safety and care he had been missing. Little by little, the walls around his heart began to come down.



Today, Iosif is one of the most dependable and hardworking young men in our program.

Although he remains quiet by nature, his actions speak loudly. Every day, seven days a week, he delivers meals to elderly men and women throughout the Broșteni area. What began nearly two decades ago through our Children’s Home has now found new life through him.

For many of the elderly he visits, the knock on the door is just as important as the meal itself. Some live completely alone. Others have limited mobility and few people to depend on. For them, Iosif’s visit brings encouragement, conversation, and the comfort of knowing someone cares.

As we watch him serve, we are reminded of the transforming power of God’s love.

The same young man who once struggled with fear and isolation now spends his days bringing hope and encouragement to others facing loneliness. God has taken a life marked by pain and turned it into a blessing for countless people.

“He raises the poor from the dust

and lifts the needy from the ash heap.” — Psalm 113:7

Iosif is living proof of that truth.



The Apostle James reminds us that true religion is caring for “orphans and widows in their distress” (James 1:27). This calling has always been at the heart of Bread of Life’s ministry — from caring for vulnerable children to serving elderly neighbors with no one else to depend on.
