Big Miracles For Little Children

“Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.”  Matt 18:10

As a Feeding Center Coordinator for Bread of Life, I became involved in helping the village of Plopoasa about five years ago because of the extreme poverty there. There was only one evangelical family living there, and no church. They were eager to help bring relief and the gospel message to their village. With the help of a brother in the US, we purchased an old store and set up a Feeding Center there. We also used the building to operate a small church to meet the spiritual needs of the community.

There are many poor families who need our help. Many people in the village have no jobs so they are in a constant search for day jobs to be able to survive. Some of the parents of the children who attend our daily feeding programs have begun attending our Sunday service. We have between 10- 15 who come wanting to hear God’s word. Among these we have a family with four boys: Gheorghiţă, Paul, Sebastian, and Mihai. The father of this family has a problem with violence and alcohol. We try to provide council and help for the mother who must endure this. It is hard for us to understand how a father goes from being the provider and protector to being a source of terror for his own family.

As the children come to the feeding program, they not only receive food but also learn God’s word and experience His love. One of these experiences happened recently. The children eat in two shifts. Some eat at noon and some at 2pm. Gheorghiţă came to eat during the later shift. That day we made a good chicken soup. As he was eating, he accidentally swallowed a little chicken bone and started shouting for help. The cook began to feel panicked and asked all the other children to pray with her for Gheorghiţă as she was getting ready to call the emergency number. As they prayed, Gheorghiţă came to her and was no longer scared, handing her the little chicken bone. All the children saw in this that God heard their prayer and intervened. This little miracle came about a month after Gheorghiţă came to Sister Valeria and told her that after one of the prayers at the Feeding Center he wanted to tell God something but did not know how. He wanted to give his life to the Lord. Praise God! Even though he is just 8 years old Gheorghiţă experiences a walk with God and faith building miracles.

Through our feeding program we not only provide relief for the physical misery of poor children but we also present God’s love as a living testimony to their families. Those of us working in Romania want to thank you for making this possible. Your involvement bears fruit here and in eternity.

Winter in our region is long and bitterly cold. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures make even the simple walk to school difficult — especially for children who only have thin summer shoes. At Bread of Life Children’s Home, we are dedicated to meeting the daily needs of the children in our care. During the winter months, heating, utilities, and food become urgent priorities. At times, because of these pressing expenses, replacing personal items like clothing or shoes must wait. Yet even in these moments, we see God working quietly behind the scenes.

In northeastern Romania, in Botoșani County, winter does not ask if anyone is ready. It comes suddenly and harshly, with long nights and a cold that seeps into the bones. For many elderly people in isolated villages, each day is a silent struggle — with the cold, with scarcity, with loneliness. Pensions are small, help is rare, and the silence inside their homes feels heavier than the frost outside. In Baranca, Hudești commune, we entered a home that has stayed with us. An almost 80-year-old man, struggling to stay mobile and weakened by illness, lives in very difficult conditions. Yet he is not alone — he cares for his 50-year-old son with a disability, completely dependent on him. A frail father who can barely move continues to carry the weight of caring for his child.

In March, spring begins to appear across America. Days grow longer. Temperatures rise. But in Eastern Europe, winter often lingers — and this year it has been one of the longest and harshest in recent memory. As winter stretches on, the hardest reality sets in. Food reserves are gone. Firewood is nearly finished. Strength is fading. What should be a season of transition instead becomes a test of endurance.
